West India Quay DLR Station, London, UK The canopies at West India Quay station on the London Docklands Light Railway, have undergone a major refurbishment that will provide passengers with greater protection from the elements. The station has two 63m long glazed canopies, one on each north and south bound platform, providing 630m² of glazed cover. MERO were contracted in to replace the existing glazing due to health and safety concerns with the original system. The refurbishment of each canopy required the removal of the existing glass and glazing system, which was then replaced with a Pilkington Planar system. Stainless steel spiders bolted to angle brackets fixed to the remaining primary steel structure, whilst Planar countersunk bolts and rotules held within the glass, bolted the glazing to the support spider. The sloping canopy glazing also had to interface with a central gutter, along which a prefabricated GRP walkway runs the full length, providing access to the top of the canopy for maintenance staff. Due to the need for the station to remain fully operational during the glazing replacement, all of the work was performed during overnight possessions once the railway had finished operating for the evening |
