McDonagh Station, Kilkenny, Ireland Surrounded by listed heritage buildings, the 1600m² workhouse square courtyard covered by a glazed MERO canopy, is the heart of a new 50 unit shopping mall that is the anchor of the McDonagh Junction redevelopment. Entirely self supported from sixteen CHS columns, the 38m x 39m canopy is constructed from 114 diameter curved members in pre-welded ladder segments that are site welded together. Lightweight secondary carrier channels bolt to each member, supporting facetted glass panels via drained bearing gaskets and flush silicone joints. Whilst most of the perimeter experiences a 300-400mm ventilation and movement gap to the surrounding buildings, there are two areas with larger gaps that are closed with a frameless vertical glass rainscreen hung from the canopy. In the crown of the main roof, automatic opening vents are glazed into the roof using the same glazing system as the glass panels, and compliment the perimeter ventilation gap to provide smoke and natural ventilation regulation to the courtyard area. To one side of the courtyard, MERO-SCHMIDLIN also provided a secondary monopitch canopy lapping underneath the main roof. Featuring bespoke tapering triangular support sections and two separate glass facades with frameless glass doors, this canopy fits around an independent listed building to control public access into the courtyard. |
